Box-Tree Moth ♀︎ (Cydalima perspectalis) - Crambidae (12/09/2023) Southbank Barn, Henfield (in the garden). Males have a distinctive black tuft at the end of their abdomen which females lack, so I think this a female.
Box-Tree Moth ♀︎ (Cydalima perspectalis) - Crambidae (12/09/2023) Southbank Barn, Henfield (in the garden on my ashtray!). It is a pest species - its caterpillars decimate Box plants - and an introduction probably from imported Box (Buxus) plants. Not sure what it is doing in the garden as there are no Box plants here! Maybe a neighbour.
Box-Tree Moth ♀︎ (Cydalima perspectalis) - Crambidae (12/09/2023) Southbank Barn, Henfield (in the garden). Then it landed on the arm rest of my chair! So you can see it has quite a long wingspan.
Six-spot Burnet Moth (Zygaena filipendulae) - Zygaenidae (21/07/2006) Cuckmere Nature Reserve, Sussex (on a Knapweed). Nothing else quite like it. Males and Female very similar so I don't know what this one is.
Six-spot Burnet Moth (Zygaena filipendulae) - Zygaenidae (21/07/2006) Cuckmere Nature Reserve, Sussex (on a Knapweed).
Broad-Bordered Bee Hawk-Moth ♀︎ (Hemaris fuciformis) - Sphingidae (28/04/2007) Minsmere Nature Reserve, Suffolk (on Lilac). I think it a female because of the pale underside of the head - males have a greener/beige underside and a browner and less red edging to their wings. The species does occur in Sussex so included here for interest despite being taken in Suffolk!
Broad-Bordered Bee Hawk-Moth ♀︎ (Hemaris fuciformis) - Sphingidae (28/04/2007) Minsmere Nature Reserve, Suffolk (on Lilac). Could be confused with Hummingbird Hawkmoth but that has a grey upper body, noit this greenish colour.
Broad-Bordered Bee Hawk-Moth ♀︎ (Hemaris fuciformis) - Sphingidae (28/04/2007) Minsmere Nature Reserve, Suffolk (on Lilac). They look a bit like hummingbirds at a distance (hence the inclusion of that word in one of the other species of these moths).
