Marbled White Butterfly ♂︎ (Melanargia galathea) - Satyridae (21/07/2006) Cuckmere Nature Reserve, Sussex (on an umbellifer of some variety). Another photo taken elsewhere but we get them in Sussex. Nothing else quite like it so easy to ID. It's a male as the underwings are white, female underwings are creamy with orangey bits.

It's a female as they have larger / bolder cream spots than males and rounder wingtips. There are four sub-species to do with locaiton making the spots vary in intensity. In England we get P. aegeria tircis.
