Common Frog ♂︎ (Rana temporia) (27/08/2023) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to driveway). Lucky to find him or her! Made me jump like anything doing a close-up of a flower! I think this may be a male as the right front foot, the "thumb" looks to have a swelling on it - a nuptial pad - that they use to grasp females when mating! They are smaller and usually paler than females as well.
Common Frog♀︎ (Rana temporia) (01/07/2006) The Driftway, Upper Beeding (a garden). I think this is a female as I can't see any nuptial pads plus females tend to be redder / browner than the paler males. They are also larger than the males.
Common Frog ♂︎ (Rana temporia) (27/08/2023) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to driveway). They have special glands in their skin to secrete mucous to keep their skin moist which helps them breathe as they have cutaneous respiration, but also provides a defence as they increase production of the mucous making them distasteful and slippery against predators.
Common Frog ♂︎ (Rana temporia) (27/08/2023) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (in the arena). He then hopped over the kickboards and into the edge of the arena! They are highly variable in colour and markings, but usually always have a dark marking behind the eye. Marsh Frogs also exist in the UK but are much larger and often have some green in between their markings.
Common Frog ♂︎ (Rana temporia) (27/08/2023) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (in the arena). Their eyes tend to be paler than other frog species found in the UK. Not a toad, by the way, as those don't secrete mucous.
Common Frog ♂︎ (Rana temporia) (18/08/2005) The Driftway, Upper Beeding (a garden). This one had me a bit confused as so different in markings from the previous specimen. However, Common Frogs vary massively in terms of markings and colour, so I don't see what else this could be. Pool Frogs which exist in the UK tend to be green in between darker markings.
Common Frog ♂︎ (Rana temporia) (18/08/2005) The Driftway, Upper Beeding (a garden). Nestling in some pond plants.
Common Frog♀︎ (Rana temporia) (27/07/2008) The Driftway, Upper Beeding (a garden). Using the pond chickweed for camofluage!
